Katchen Kids Week 10 & 11
These past two weeks have been busy. October flew by as we were learning and growing in 3rd grade. Here are some highlights:
In reading: we just finished our historical fiction book, Sarah, Plain, and Tall. We spent time learning about the elements of historical fiction and the importance of reading with a mindset of the time and setting. We also spent time studying effective and ineffective book clubs as we develop Book Club norms for the start of our Historical Fiction Book Clubs next week.
In Math: we just completed Chapter 2, Mental Math, and will be starting addition and subtraction up to 10,000 and word problems using bar modeling. Please continue to work on math facts by playing the math activities with your child. The repetitive practice of math facts helps build fluency, number sense, and number flexibility. The cards and dice that were in your child's Halloween treat bag from me are to help aid with the math activities.
In Writing: we are on our second narrative writing piece and students are working on using all the tools and strategies that they learned during their first writing piece. They are also practicing being a "job captain," where they are independently problem-solving as they work through the writing process.
In Science: we have learned so much about the structures/functions and life cycles of plants and crayfish during our first science unit. Students have worked hard to plan and present what they learned to the class. It has been great to see them teach us all.
