Katchen Kids Week #6
This week in 3rd we have worked hard to grow our reading lives by learning how to retell important parts of the books we read. This will build comprehension and love of reading. Many kids who do not enjoy reading are struggling to connect with books because they are not yet using reading is thinking skills. We practiced retelling our read aloud, Thank You, Mr. Faulker, by using the story mountain/plot diagram to pull out important parts of the story. This comprehension strategy is important as students continue to read longer books. This is a difficult but valuable activity. Ask your child about the story by Patricia Polacco, Thank You, Mr. Faulker. They all enjoyed it and realized that the more they think about the story the more connected they become. Then later in the week, each student did a retelling of the individual book that they just finished.
Jarrett Payton came to Hough to talk to our school about the importance of helping others. He talked about his life with his dad, Walter Payton, who taught him through experiences how great it felt to help others.
Students who were recognized on the Pride Board for September were able to celebrate with a photo together with Mr. Aalfs. Way to go!
In writing, we are finishing our first narrative stories by revising/editing and now typing the final copy to use for our book trailers next week. You will love seeing these book trailers!
In science, our crayfish arrived ( a week early) but we adjusted and they are happy in their new habitats. We will explore and learn more about them this coming week.
In word study, we are working on using context clues to find the meaning of unknown words while reading. We read about Helen Keller and practiced these new skills.
In math, we are still working on building our mental math skills by using place value, making tens, and developing our flexibility of thinking about numbers. These are skills that will be used all through math in higher grades. Some strategies are clicking for some and the math practice skills that are being used and developed are so important. Take a look at these skills that are imperative for all math learning.
